Small business website checklist: 12 things every site needs

Use this checklist to judge your current website, or to brief whoever builds your next one. If a site misses more than a couple of these, it is almost certainly losing customers.

The first screen

1. It says what you do and where, in one line. 2. The main action (call, book, buy, get a quote) is visible without scrolling. 3. It looks right and loads quickly on a phone, because that is where most visitors are.

Answers before questions

4. Prices, or at least “from” prices. 5. The areas you cover or your address and opening hours. 6. Your services, each explained in a sentence or two. 7. What happens after someone gets in touch.

Trust

8. Real photos of you, your work or your premises, not just stock images. 9. Genuine reviews or accreditations, if you have them. 10. Clear contact details: phone, email and a simple form.

The technical basics

11. A secure connection (the padlock, https) and your own domain name. 12. Clear page titles and descriptions so Google can show you properly.

How did yours do?

If your site missed a few, the fixes are often quick. If it missed most, a redesign is usually faster and cheaper than patching. That is exactly what our £79 Basic refresh is for.

Questions

Should I show prices on my website?

In most trades, yes. Even “from” prices filter out the wrong enquiries and reassure the right customers.

Do I need a contact form if I list my phone number?

Ideally both. Some people prefer to call, others want to send a message outside working hours.
