Domain names and web hosting explained simply

Every website needs two things besides the design: a domain name, which is its address, and hosting, which keeps it online. Here is what each one is, in plain English.

What a domain name is

Your domain is your address on the internet, like yourbusiness.co.uk. You rent it yearly from a registrar, and as long as you renew it, it is yours.

What hosting is

Hosting is the computer that stores your website and shows it to visitors around the clock. You pay for it monthly or yearly.

What they typically cost

A .co.uk or .com domain is usually around £10 to £20 a year. Basic hosting for a small business site is often a few pounds a month. Prices vary by provider, so compare before you buy.

Always own your domain

Register the domain in your own name, with your own login. If someone else owns it, they effectively own your address, and moving away later can be painful.

Questions

Do I need a .co.uk or a .com?

For a UK business serving local customers, .co.uk is a natural choice. A .com suits businesses with customers abroad. Many businesses buy both.

Can I get email at my domain?

Yes. Many hosting plans include email addresses like [email protected], which look far more professional than a free address.
